The next Castlevania game probably isn't what you expected. It's not in the style of Lords of Shadow, nor will it be arriving on consoles at all. It's a Castlevania mobile game called Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, and it even features multiplayer. Announced late last year, Konami reveals new details on this upcoming title.

During the Tokyo Game Show 2019, Konami showed off the next entry in the Castlevania series, Grimoire of Souls, and is as of right now exclusive on mobile iOS and Android devices. Although we don't have a release date yet, Konami released a brand new gameplay trailer and English language site that overviews the Castlevania mobile game.

Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls lets players take the role of various characters from the Castlevania series: Alucard, Simon Belmont, Charlotte, Shanoa, and Maria. Genya Arikado also makes a return, as well. As for the story itself, check out the website's official description:

Many years have passed since the defeat of Count Dracula, and humanity has entered an age of peaceful prosperity.

Until one day, Genya Arikado receives a mysterious letter.

"The Grimoires have awoken, and the world is being consumed by darkness. I implore you, please come to our aid!"

Wary of what may be lying in wait before him, Genya Arikado ventures forth into the moonlit night.

Right now, there appear to be two gameplay modes. One features singleplayer and has the sprawling, side-scrolling singleplayer gameplay Castlevania fans know and love. Bounty Hunt is likely to be the most compelling, which is a multiplayer mode tasking a group of kill as many enemies as they can under a time limit.

As of right now, there is no release date or price for Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, so stay tuned. In other Konami news, they recently announced that Frogger was also going to mobile with a new game exclusively for Apple Arcade.

Quick Take

I groaned when I heard that this was a mobile title, but upon looking into it, it doesn't look bad. It's a pretty game to look at for mobile, and the multiplayer mode could actually be fun. Unfortunately, it's probably going to be riddled with microtransactions. I would not be opposed to paying a flat fee and just being able to explore and enjoy the game in full, but that's wishful thinking on my part.
