Japanese free-to-play smartphone RPG Another Eden: The Cat That Travels Through Space And Time is getting a Nintendo Switch release, developer Wright Flyer Studios has announced.

The news came yesterday during the developer's three-hour live stream to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Another Eden. Currently, the game is available in Japan on iOS and Android, having originally been released for these platforms in April 2017. No Western release has been announced, either for the smartphone version of the game or for the now-upcoming Switch version. Luckily, the Switch is region-free, so if you've been hankering for a slice of Another Eden, you'll still be able to pick it up and play it wherever you may be. It is worth noting, though, that there isn't currently an English language option in the mobile release, so you'll need a good knowledge of Japanese to play this one.

Another Eden is a single-player free-to-play sidescrolling RPG which sees players take control of Aldo and his sister, Feene. While attempting to rescue his sister from danger, Aldo accidentally finds himself 800 years in the future. Gameplay-wise, the game incorporates side-scrolling exploration alongside full 3D sections, as well as classic turn-based JRPG combat. The game features paid microtransactions in the form of "Chronos Stones", which allow players access to a gacha-style system to gamble for stronger items and characters. It's not yet clear how these mechanics will be implemented into the Switch version, if at all.

If some of the time-traveling concepts or distinctive music in Another Eden seem familiar, that's because the game features the talents of Masato Kato, scriptwriter for JRPG classics such as Chrono TriggerXenogears and some parts of Final Fantasy VII. He's joined by venerated composer Yasunori Mitsuda, who also worked on the Chrono and Xeno franchises alongside Kato, but is also well-known for composing music for Shadow Hearts and Inazuma Eleven, among others. The developer's name, Wright Flyer Studios, is a reference to the first ever successful heavier-than-air powered aircraft.

Another Eden will be released for Nintendo Switch in Japan sometime in 2018, according to Wright Flyer Studios. There's no word yet on a Western release, but with the Switch's region-free capabilities, anyone with a decent grasp of the language (or, indeed, without) will have a chance to nab this one when it eventually comes along.
