Some games are delayed because they need more time to be finished. Other games are delayed because something broke at the last minute. Gravity Rush 2 is not being delayed for either of those reasons, instead, Sony announcing that the game is being delayed because the original release date of December 2nd was just too busy.
In a statement on the PlayStation Blog, director Keiichiro Toyama had this to say:
In July, we announced a release date for Gravity Rush 2 that we felt most appropriate for the title. Since then, though production is proceeding smoothly, the landscape for that release date has changed dramatically. While he doesn't directly mention what the changes are, it's not difficult to guess. Gravity Rush 2's original release date was rather empty, then Final Fantasy XV got delayed to November 30th, while The Last Guardian got delayed to December 6th. The result? Gravity Rush 2 was smashed between two of the biggest, most hyped games of the year. Of course, the new release date does bring up some concerns of its own, as it's only four days before Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Yakuza 0.Gravity Rush 2 is the conclusion of Kat’s journey, so we want players to have enough time to dive deep into her story. In addition, as a lot of work went into online features that allow for asynchronous player interaction, we want as many people as possible playing the title at the same time. Thus, after careful deliberation, we have decided to change the release date. Gravity Rush 2 will now launch on January 20, 2017.
If you've been patiently waiting for Gravity Rush 2 then there is at least some good news. Originally some premium story-based DLC was going to come out for Gravity Rush 2. This was originally going to cost money, but now the developers are going to make this DLC free to everyone to make up for the delay. There aren't many details on the DLC just yet, other than it's "an additional story that takes place in the world of Gravity Rush 2."
Gravity Rush 2 is releasing January 20th, 2017 exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
