THQ Nordic has announced that Piranha Bytes' cult RPG classic Gothic is making its way to Nintendo Switch.

Importantly, this isn't the Gothic remake that's currently in the works over at Alkimia Interactive.

Rather, it's a port of the original Gothic, which THQ Nordic appears to be referring to as Gothic Classic

This marks the first time that the original Gothic has been available outside of PC, so it's a pretty exciting opportunity to check out an oft-overlooked RPG experience on your Switch. It'll come on September 28, 2023.

You can check out the Gothic Switch announcement trailer, which shows off the charmingly old-school visuals of the game, right here.

No mention has been made of Gothic making its way to other consoles, so it looks like the console version is a Switch exclusive, at least for the time being.

Even though this is very much a port of the original Gothic, that isn't stopping THQ Nordic from making some changes to the game in order to make it more palatable to modern audiences.

Changes to the Switch version include attitudes persisting on save and reload, gate guards no longer being fooled by a drawn weapon, and animations for eating rice and soup, among many others.

This is, of course, in addition to native gamepad UI and controls to make Gothic play smoothly on Switch. After all, you wouldn't want to have to plug in a USB keyboard to play this one, right?

If you missed out on Gothic the first time around, it's an RPG from the studio that would go on to create other cult classics like Risen and Elex.

The game is known for its grounded, realistic aesthetic and unique approach to combat, as well as the faction-based narrative that would go on to influence further Piranha Bytes games.
