Microsoft have announced the dates for the Gears of War 4 beta and given details on how players can get into the multiplayer beta.
On April 18 people who have played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on either Xbox One or Windows 10, players will receive invites to have "early access" to the beta up until April 24. After this period, all "eligible" Xbox Live Gold players on Xbox One can play until May 1. Microsoft have yet to explain how these players will be "eligible".
Originally the date for players gaining access by playing Gears of War: Ultimate Edition was Match 1 but Microsoft have decided to move the date up to April 11.
No details on what maps or game modes will be present in the Gears of War 4 beta have been given by Microsoft. This isn't all too surprising considering not a lot in known about the multiplayer for Gears of War 4.
It was also recently announced that Splash Damage, the studio behind Brink and Quake Wars is working on the multiplayer portion of Gears of War 4. Revealed by Game Informer Splash Damage will be helping with aspects of the multiplayer. Rod Fergusson, who is the studio head at The Coalition, the studio now responsible for the Gears of War franchise, spoke on Splash Damage's involvement.
“They’re helping with a lot of the level design stuff . . . Especially with meshing of multiplayer maps, we’re tapping into the expertise they got from Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. They also have a lot of expertise with online systems, in terms of matchmaking from Ultimate Edition."
The partnership isn't completely out of the blue considering Splash Damage helped with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.
So, when it comes to the beta, Microsoft have apparently gone for a multi-layered tier system for getting in. If you play Gear of War Ultimate Edition before April 11 you can get into the Early Access portion of the beta. Then from April 25 to May 1 eligible Xbox Live Gold players can play in the Open Beta.
