Developer Colossal Order and publisher Paradox have released new information about what's coming in the final Cities: Skylines 2 patch of the year.

In a new Word of the Week column on Steam, which will also be the final one of its kind before 2024, Colossal Order looks ahead to the new update, which is coming "this week".

More Cities: Skylines 2 improvements are on the way.

You're not getting full patch notes just yet, but the developer does reveal that the patch will add level of detail models for characters and "improve the geometry layout for all assets".

This won't be the last performance-related patch, Colossal Order says, but it brings the studio "one more step towards [its] goals". The developer has previously pledged to fix Cities: Skylines 2's performance issues before offering paid DLC for the game.

Plenty of gameplay fixes will also be implemented in this week's update, including fixes for how money is calculated and shown, changes to how vehicles switch lanes, and the addition of line colors for cargo trains and ships.

Two new maps will be added as part of the update, both of which were the result of "internal testing of the Map Editor", according to Colossal Order. Said editor is still not ready for public release, but the developer says it's "making good progress".

More maps are coming to Cities: Skylines 2.

Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen says she briefed Cities: Skylines 2's designers with suggestions titled "Land of the Eternal Sun" and "Flatland", but that to her "great disappointment", those names were subsequently changed.

As such, the new maps will be Sunshine Peninsula, which gets no rain whatsoever, and Flatland, which doesn't have contour lines because it's literally a completely flat land.

The post ends with a reiteration of the Cities: Skylines 2 roadmap for 2024, which includes modding, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S releases, and the aforementioned paid DLC, plus more.

Cities: Skylines 2 is currently available for PC, and it's also included as part of PC Game Pass. The last 2023 update for the game will arrive sometime this week. Stay tuned for more.
