Get ready to head back to Revachol for a new challenge: Disco Elysium Hardcore Mode has arrived as a free update.
Check out the trailer showing off the game's setting along with the new ultrawide resolution:
If you've never played Disco Elysium before, it's a little hard to describe. Take a bunch of people who really like playing role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. Now, make them hardcore enough to create their own setting, and then step things up another notch by turning that custom setting into a video game. That's the genesis of Disco Elysium, and it shows.
Players are able to enjoy a frankly crazy level of freedom as they explore a troubled Steampunk city. Dice rolls are king, of course, and you'll have to make careful, considered choices in your role as a law enforcement officer. Unfortunately, our unnamed hero is... a bit of a mess.
How does Disco Elysium Hardcore Mode Work?
This game is challenging enough as it is, so how does Disco Elysium Hardcore Mode work? It's all broken down in an announcement on the game's Steam Community page.
Here are the highlights:
- Checks are more difficult, lowering your chances of success.
- Less money drops overall.
- Prices of pharmaceuticals have gone up and they're rarer.
- Buffs from drugs are much more important for success.
- Your starting clothes are "more important."
- Thought Cabinet debuffs are more severe.
- To compensate for the increased challenge, your Level will increase faster.
While Hardcore Mode is certainly more challenging, players can at least enjoy the one saving grace of increased XP gain. It's not for the faint of heart, though, so you probably don't want to even attempt to play this game mode until you have some more time in the base game.
