Dawn Raid on Nvidia French Offices Is Likely Unrelated to Gaming

Nvidia's French offices suffered a dawn raid during an investigation by the local Competition Authority, but it's unlikely to be related to the manufacturer's gaming business.

The raid carried out this week was reported by the Wall Street Journal and partly confirmed by the Competition Authority itself, albeit the company was not named in the authority's announcement.

What we do know is that this is related to an investigation launched by the authority on cloud computing within the Infrastructure-as-a-service and Platform-as-a-service fields for business use.

It's worth mentioning that the authority explicitly said that the dawn raids do not pre-suppose that the law has been broken.

The investigation is supposed to cast a wide net to "analyze various practices implemented or likely to be implemented in this sector, which could restrict competition."

That being said, it's very unlikely that Nvidia's business of manufacturing and selling graphics cards for gaming is involved in any way in the investigation in question.

In other competition news that is definitely related to gaming, the FTC has resumed its proceeding in the (so far largely unsuccessful) attempt to counter Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, but it's very unlikely that it'll be able to block it before it happens.

Nvidia has been involved in the controversy, initially expressing concerns over possible unfair competition in the cloud gaming industry, only to turn around and support Microsoft after striking a deal that allows the distribution of Activision Games on Geforce Now

Such distribution has already started back in May and also included select games by Microsoft itself, like Gears 5
