A densely-packed city in Cities: Skylines 2

Colossal Order and Paradox have released another Cities: Skylines 2 development diary, and this one's all about the massive maps the game has to offer.

According to the devs, maps in Cities: Skylines 2 will be 5 times bigger than those of the first game.

The playable area will be around 159 kilometers squared, which, according to the new trailer, is "bigger than some countries". That's a lot of surface area for your inevitable poop rivers.

Map tiles don't have to connect, either, so you can technically create a bunch of isolated towns and run them all separately if you want to.

A range of themed maps will be available, including Mountain Village, Lakeland, and Windy Fjords, among others.

These themes all have different latitudes, climates, and natural resources, so they'll all present a different challenge when building your city.

You can even select which side of the road you want your traffic to drive on, and that's agnostic of whether you've picked European or North American theming as well.

You'll unlock new Cities: Skylines 2 map tile permits as you reach Milestones. Buying these means expanding your play area and getting more room to grow.

Every map has at least one pre-built road connection out of the city, and most of them also have pre-built train and seaway connections, too.

Of course, you can always build more routes out of the city if you feel you need extra trade options.

Finally, the new dev diary discusses theming in Cities: Skylines 2

You can choose from either North American or European theming, which controls "street markings, traffic lights, vehicle models for certain city services, and other roadside props".

Residential and commercial building appearances are also dictated by these themes, but you can select those at will, so you can have North American-themed residences in a European city if you wish.

Be sure to take a look at the new Cities: Skylines 2 dev diary breakdown on Steam if you want more info on all things map-related.

Cities: Skylines 2 launches for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 24th.
