The giant space whale on which you build your city in Beyond These Stars

If you liked the spacefaring city-builder Before We Leave, you'll be pleased to know that its developer Balancing Monkey is working on a sequel. Beyond These Stars sees you building a civilization on the back of a giant space whale, and it's scheduled to land on Steam sometime this year.

The idea behind Beyond These Stars is a simple one. The Peeps from Before We Leave have found themselves on the back of Kewa, a lonely Space Whale on a journey across the universe. You must tend to Kewa's needs, grow and maintain your civilization, and deal with alien races you come across during your travels. You can check out the announcement trailer for Beyond These Stars right here.

Beyond These Stars is the latest in a line of city-builders set on the backs of giant creatures, and as you'd imagine, this one also has you managing your relationship with the creature. Will you exploit Kewa to the fullest, letting your Peeps live in luxury but causing the creature to suffer, or will you keep your exploitation to a minimum and risk your Peeps' ire? Your goal is to find a happy medium between the two, hopefully arriving at a sustainable way of living that keeps both Kewa and your Peeps as happy as possible.

This being a city-builder, you will, of course, have plenty of other challenges to contend with. These include resource generation and allocation, as well as space management, research, and diplomacy. In short, if you're a fan of this genre and you want another relaxing, chill time similar to Before We Leave, you'll likely find one here.

Beyond These Stars is set to arrive on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store sometime this year. The game will launch into Early Access, so you'll get a chance to test out its mechanics and offer feedback before a full launch. Stay tuned for more info.
