Our current Modern Masters 2017 Full Spoilers list is a complete record of all the spoilers for one of the game's most popular set releases.

As well as this we have plenty of other card gaming content for you to peruse, including a guide to Magic the Gathering itself in case you're uniniated.

Modern Master 2017 Spoilers 02/27/17

It seems just like yesterday that we were covering spoilers for the latest Magic: The Gathering set from Wizards of the Coast, Aether Revolt, yet here we are with another set just a few weeks away from being released. Unlike Aether Revolt, which primarily features new cards, mechanics, and settings, this set is the third iteration of a reprint compilation product line called Modern Masters, which aims at putting cards legal to the Modern format into players hands.

The first four spoilers for the day are from a variety of source, including Wizards of the Coast, Tolarian Community College, and Japanese storefront bigmagic.

  • Damnation: Two generic and two black mana, Sorcery. Destroy all creatures, they can't be regenerated.
  • Goblin Guide: One red mana, 2/2 Goblin Scout creature, Haste. Whenever Goblin Guide attacks, defending player reveals the top card of their library; if it's a land card, they put it into their hand.
  • Stoic Angel: One generic, one green, one white and one blue mana, 3/4 Angel, Flying and Vigilance. Players can't untap more than one creature during their untap steps.
  • Restoration Angel: Three generic and one white mana, 3/4 Angel, Flash and Flying. When Restoration Angel enters the battlefield, you may exile target non-Angel creature you control, then return that card to the battlefield under your control.

A good deal of Wizards of the Coast's preview coverage for the day went towards lands that will be present in Modern Masters 2017; after being notably absent in the Battle for Zendikar block proper, the Zendikar fetch lands will see reprint in this set.

There will also be a number of lands present in the set for the sole purpose of color-fixing during Limited Drafts; this includes Shards of Alara's tri-lands, and the guildgates from the Return to Ravnica block.

Modern Masters 2017 Spoilers 02/28/2017

Yesterday, TechRaptor began coverage of Modern Masters 2017, the next iteration of the Modern Masters Magic: The Gathering line from Wizards of the Coast. This set is composed entirely of reprints from sets that are Modern format legal, with a particular focus on cards from the Zendikar, Alara, Return to Ravnica and Innistrad blocks.

Today's first spoilers feature one of the cards making an appearance on Modern Masters 2017 booster pack artwork, the demon Griselbrand.

Modern Masters 2017 Spoilers 03/02/2017

The previous three days of Modern Masters 2017 spoiler coverage have shown that, unlike previous Magic: The Gathering Modern Masters product, Wizards of the Coast is reprinting tons of value in the set at almost every level of rarity.

We do have a few spoilers from yesterday to go over first, however, as they were posted while TechRaptor was suffering from a few database issues; the first three of these spoilers includes Terminus, another component of the Legacy Miracles deck.

  • Gifts Ungiven: Three generic and one blue mana, Instant. Search your library for up to four cards with different names and reveal them. Target opponent chooses two of those cards. Put the chosen cards into your graveyard and the rest into your hand. Then shuffle your library.

The second half of the missed spoilers from yesterday include Blood Moon, an incredibly strong sideboard card (and in some cases, a mainboard card) and Voice of Resurgence, which holds the dubious honor of being the only card of value from Dragon's Maze.

  • Blood Moon: Two generic and one red mana, Enchantment. Nonbasic lands are Mountains.
  • Scavenging Ooze: One generic and one green mana, 2/2 Ooze. Pay one green mana: Exile target card from a graveyard. If it was a creature card, put a +1/+1 counter on Scavenging Ooze and you gain 1 life.

Whenever an opponent casts a spell during your turn or when Voice of Resurgence dies, create a green and white Elemental creature token with "This creature's power and toughness are each equal to the number of creatures you control."

The first spoilers for today include the much anticipated Cavern of Souls reprint, as well as a reprint of Cruel Ultimatum, which is fitting as the next Standard-legal set, Amonkhet, will feature Nicol Bolas quite heavily.

  • Cavern of Souls: Land. As Cavern of Souls enters the battlefield, choose a creature type. Tap to add one generic mana to your mana pool, or tap to add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Spend this mana only to cast a creature spell of the chosen type, and that spell can't be countered.
  • Compulsive Research: Two generic and one blue mana, Sorcery. Target player draws three cards. Then that player discards two cards unless he or she discards a land card.
  • Fiery Justice: One red, one green, and one white mana, Sorcery. Fiery Justice deals 5 damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures and/or players. Target opponent gains 5 life.
  • Augur of Bolas: One generic and one blue mana, 1/3 Merfolk Wizard. When Augur of Bolas enters the battlefield, look at the top three cards of your library. You may reveal an instant or sorcery card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.
  • Cruel Ultimatum: Two blue, three black, and two red mana, Sorcery. Target opponent sacrifices a creature, discards three cards, then loses 5 life. You return a creature card from your graveyard to your hand, draw three cards, then gain 5 life.

Earlier this week, an alleged Tarmogofy reprint was making its way around various Magic: The Gathering forums. While at the time it was considered to be fake, today Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that Tarmogofy will be in a Modern Masters set for the third time in a row.

  • Serum Visions: One blue mana, Instant. Draw a card. Scry 2.
  • Izzet Charm: One blue and one red mana, Instant. Choose one: Counter target noncreature spell unless its controller pays two generic mana; or, Izzet Charm deals 2 damage to target creature; or, Draw two cards, then discard two cards.

Alongside Flickerwisp, Wizards of the Coast spoiled a cycle of cards from New Phyrexia which, when entering the battlefield, create a 3/3 colorless Golem artifact creature token. Here is the first half of that cycle, which features mono-white creature cards.

In addition to the Zendikar fetch lands, the Alara tri-lands, the Return to Ravnica guildgates, and Cavern of Souls, Wizards of the Coast is also including the original Ravnica block Signet cycle as a method of mana fixing; the Signet cycle is a series of artifacts which players can use to generate mana of that specific guild's colors (blue and red for Izzet, blue and black for Dimir, etc.) by paying one generic mana and tapping the Signet.

Final Analysis

The previous four days of spoilers from Wizards of the Coast and various content creators for the newest Magic: The Gathering set, Modern Masters 2017, have been full of excitement and hype as more and more Modern format staples were revealed to be receiving much-needed reprints. From cards such as Cavern of Souls to Blood Moon, to Liliana of the Veil, just about every archetype and deck received some attention in this set - even the Legacy format got a little love, as the Miracles deck utilizes quite a few of the cards reprinted in Modern Masters 2017.

Today, Wizards of the Coast released the full set spoiler, making every card not previewed by themselves or by content creators available for evaluation. While a full evaluation of the set, both in terms of Limited play-ability as well as impact on the secondary market, will be dealt with at a later date, we can take a look at something immediately noticeable - the high amount of rarity downshifts, compared to rarity upshifts.

Typically when a card is reprinted in another set, it either undergoes a rarity upshift (as is the case with Snapcaster Mage, which went from a rare in Innistrad to mythic rare in Modern Masters 2017) or a rarity downshift (as is the case with Mortician Beetle, which went from being a rare in Rise of the Eldrazi to a common in Modern Masters 2017). According to this compilation by Reddit user TechnomagusPrime, a total of 19 cards were upshifted in rarity, while 24 cards were downshifted. Previous reprint compilation sets have been favored towards rarity upshifts, so to see Modern Masters 2017 spread the value out in the uncommons and rares, as opposed to a few chase mythics, is very surprising.

For Modern Masters 2017, Wizards of the Coast again used the accelerated preview schedule they used with Aether Revolt, finishing the set preview within a week as opposed to the two weeks that have been historically used. While I still feel that one week isn't enough time to fully take in a new set, it does work better for a reprint compilation set such as Modern Masters 2017, rather than a completely brand new set like Aether Revolt - these are cards we've seen before, and feature mechanics that we're familiar with. I'm still holding on to the hope that this isn't the new norm for preview schedules and that Wizards of the Coast returns to the two-week schedule with Amonkhet.
