In the world of Shardlight, things are pretty darn bad. The world has been devastated by war. Those that remain are ruled over by the Aristocrats, a group of wealthy people who receive regular vaccinations to protect them from the hazards of the new world. Food and water are scarce, and most people are destined to die in the streets in squalor. Enter Amy Wellard, a decidedly poor person who is getting sicker by the day and just trying to survive.
An opportunity comes up for Amy to enter the vaccine lottery — a rare chance for those who can't afford the exorbitant prices of medicine. She just has to take on a simple task for the government and complete it successfully. It can't be that hard... can it?
Utilizing a simple "one-click" interface, Shardlight is a newer Adventure game that's nonetheless made in the classical style. Explore a post-apocalyptic world and solve puzzles while you try to unravel the grand mystery before you (and hopefully earn a cure in the process).
Featuring lovely pixel art, robust voice acting, and a haunting music track, Shardlight is a game that will stay with you for a very long time.
From the Shardlight website:
The world ended on the day the bombs fell. Since then, it’s always been like this: disease, hunger, death. The ruling Aristocrats — a faceless oligarchy that controls all resources — have unchallenged authority. There’s never enough food, water, or vaccine to go around. The rich receive regular doses of vaccinations in exchange for their unconditional government support. The poor live in fear, superstition, and squalor until they die.
Amy Wellard, a young woman reluctantly working for the government to qualify for the vaccine lottery, believes there’s a cure — and she’s going to find it. Even if it costs her her life.
