This week in State of the Game we’ll be covering the top games, trending titles and interesting stats for games released on Steam between the 19th and 25th of February this year. At a high level, most of the top level stats are down from last week, mostly due to the lack of a big name release. There were, however, a few smaller releases that made up the majority of this week’s stats so let’s take a closer look at them.

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet takes the crown of the most played game this week. Just over two weeks on from its release and its still doing quite well, retaining around 75% of its player base (average is around 50%). Unsurprisingly the title has found most of its audience in the Asia region with the top 3 countries by a number of players being China, USA, and Japan respectively. The rolling average of recent play time is starting to tail off however so it will be interesting to see how it fares over the next few weeks.

Hunt Showdown the latest game from Crytek comes in at second. In terms of retention, it actually did better than Fatal Bullet managing to keep some 82% 2 weeks on. Average recent play time has also been increasing as well, indicating that there likely isn’t a dip coming in the near future. It is interesting to note that this is an Early Access title, something you wouldn’t typically see from a big name studio like Crytek. Time will tell if they can stick to their 12-month deadline though!

In third, we have Metal Gear Survive which despite its lackluster reception still has players engaged for an average of over 28 hours. That’s about 10 times what it was in the beta which is quite impressive. It does seem like it’s not a game for Metal Gear fans per se, but there does appear to be a niche of people who thoroughly enjoy it.
