On Tuesday, Starbreeze AB announced that they had signed a publishing agreement with Otherside Entertainment, whereupon $12 million will be invested to bring System Shock 3 to PC and 'other platforms.'

System Shock 3 is under the direction of Warren Spector and a 'dream team', that was behind titles such as the original System Shock & System Shock 2, as well as Thief: The Dark Project and Deus Ex.

“System Shock is one of those iconic franchises in the history of games that still gets my blood going and Mr. Spector is one of the founding fathers of the modern action RPG,” said Bo Andersson-Klint, Starbreeze CEO. “We’re greatly looking forward to bringing System Shock 3 to players world wide in our collaboration with Otherside Entertainment and Warren Spector’s team. I’ll be first in line to play."
The agreement states that Starbreeze will be able to recoup 120% of its 'full investment', which includes marketing costs, as well as their revenue share of 50% after their investment is recouped. Perhaps most importantly, Otherside Entertainment will retain 100% of intellectual property relating to System Shock 3.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Starbreeze for System Shock 3,” said OtherSide’s CEO Paul Neurath. They truly get games and gamers, and have been able to translate that understanding into a robust publishing business, and build thriving gaming communities around their franchises.”
For those who wish to receive updates for System Shock 3 (which is still in the Early Concept stage of development), be sure to go here to receive updates as they gradually become available.

Quick Take:

More funding for any game in development is always good news, especially when Otherside retains the intellectual property rights to their title. Too many publishers try to take over and make a developer's games more suitable for a wider audience, which would destroy System Shock 3. I really enjoyed the demo they released and those that played the original seemed pleasantly surprised, so hopefully, this helps to translate System Shock 3 into a worthy successor to the earlier classics in the System Shock series.
