Cardboard Utopia has announced the release date for their tactical RPG Children of Zodiarcs with the help of Square Enix Collective. The project held a Kickstarter in 2016 and raised 5 times its target. Now the game will be ready to launch on July 18, 2017.
The game focuses on a group of thieves attempting to steal a valuable mysterious relic to fight against an oppressive empire. In Children of Zodiarcs tactical action, card decks and dice are combined for a varied gameplay experience. Players will unlock special powers as they delve deeper into the exciting role playing game.
Samuel Daher, Design Director at Cardboard Utopia explains the game,
We’ve brought together deck-building and dice-crafting with grid-based combat arenas . It’s a mechanic we think combines strategy with controlled risk to build tension, anticipation, and excitement. Add to that some big characters and a big story, and what you end up with is a tactical RPG that’s larger than life.
Cardboard Utopia was inspired by popular tactical RPGs of the 16-bit and 32-bit eras. They have tried to both recapture that retro experience while building upon them to create something new. Children of Zodiarcs combines the RPG genre with interesting board game elements players will use to unlock the power of the Zodiarcs.
Jason Kim, Creative Director at Cardboard Utopia says,
Having built a community of loyal fans thanks to our Kickstarter campaign, it feels really exciting to lift the lid on just when gamers will be able to get their hands on Children of Zodiarcs.
It’s also a nervy time, too. We’ve put everything into delivering an experience that recaptures the joy people felt playing those tactical RPGs all those years ago, and because we’re a small studio, you can see the influence of each and every one of us in the game.
The indie nature of the project got Square Enix Collective’s attention leading them to feature Children of Zodiarcs on the Collective feedback platform and then to support the Kickstarter campaign. Now Square Enix Collective is publishing the unique game, bringing it to PlayStation 4 and PC on July 18th. Learn more about the game at the official website.
