Snapchat and parent company Snap Inc. have announced their own gaming platform. It's called Snap Games and it'll work from within Snapchat itself.

Snap Inc. revealed Snap Games during the Snap Partner Summit yesterday. The company describes its new venture as "mobile games, made for friends". You'll be able to launch Snap Games from the Snapchat app's Chat bar, and no installations will be needed. Snap Games wants to make gaming immediate and accessible to those using its app. You can see friends playing games, chat to them while they're doing so, and talk to each other using voice chat.

The first original game for Snap Games is Bitmoji Party, developed by Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride designer Luke Muscat. Similar to Mario PartyBitmoji Party is a mini-game compilation designed to be played by small groups of players. Each player will create their own Bitmoji avatar and use them to battle their friends in said mini-games. Bitmoji Party mini-games include avoiding being kicked into a goal by a giant boot, staying afloat on a pool toy, and attempting to infect fellow players with a zombie plague. It's all light-hearted fun, obviously, so don't expect The Walking Dead.

Five more games will initially be rolled out for Snap Games, with more to follow. These games are as follows:

  • Tiny Royale - a "bite-sized Battle Royale" game from Words With Friends and Farmville creators Zynga
  • Snake Squada co-operative multiplayer game developed by Game Closure
  • C.A.T.S. Drift Racea competitive drift racing title from Cut the Rope developer ZeptoLab
  • Zombie Rescue Squada PikPok game in which you and friends rescue survivors from zombies
  • Alphabear Hustlea co-operative Alphabear spin-off from Spry Fox in which players collaborate to form words
All of the games on the service will be based on HTML-5 and won't have any in-app purchases at launch. Monetization will come in the form of built-in advertising which can be watched as a way to gain in-game currency or bonuses. Snap Inc. says Snap Games will launch with "video advertising featuring Snap's non-skippable, six-second Commercials ad format". We don't know any details on any more games to come for Snap Games, but Snap Inc. is keen on expanding its developer partners and bringing more games to its app.
