If you’ve been disappointed in Capcom’s Street Fighter V or just wanted to see a return to form by SNK, the Atlus published and SNK developed King of Fighters XIV has probably been in your view for a while now. While it may lack the classic pixel art of some of the games past, the style and combat set up seem designed to take the classic King of Fighters formula and bring it to the modern day.
For those who have been waiting for the game that marks SNK’s return, they’ll be able to give it a try sooner than they may have been expecting with a demo launching July 19 in North America and Europe, and July 20th in Asia. This will be about a month before King of Fighters XIV August 23 release and let players try out some of the features. The demo will feature 7 characters for players to choose from: Kyo Kusanagi, Mai Shiranui, Iori Yagami, Sylvie Paula Paula, King of Dinosaurs, Shun’ei, and Nelson. While online play won’t be enabled, local versus mode will be, as will a versus mode against the CPU. Also included will be a tutorial and training mode to learn the games mechanics and practice up for launch. As a bonus, the demo comes with a free dynamic PlayStation 4 theme for your enjoyment.
While that’s pretty cool, King of Fighters XIV seems to be taking some notes from the mistakes Capcom made with the launch of Street Fighter V. While Street Fighter V downplayed story mode, in fact delaying it until months after launch, King of Fighters XIV appears to celebrate its story mode as they released a new trailer, which showcases the story of the game and sets the stage for the competition. It also shows some of the info about the demo mentioned above and lets you see the faces of the seven characters available if you aren’t familiar with King of Fighters lineup or want to see how they are rendered in this rendition.
However, we’re not done yet! We also have some a trailer of the villain Antonov who in-game bought the rights to the King of Fighters tournament so that he could host a new tournament. There isn’t a ton in what is basically a character introduction trailer but it does show a taste of gameplay footage and the characters personality.
We also have some more screenshots here we’ll toss in to help satisfy any King of Fighters XIV desires you may have. If you are wanting to pick it up and pre-order for some reason, there is a special Burn to Fight edition that was announced earlier this year.
