It’s not very often that a piece on TechRaptor goes up reporting on 8chan, but I think that a good number of our readers frequent the site. After all, it is the site that carried GamerGate onward after the exodus from what some now (un)affectionately call “halfchan”. If you are among the aforementioned group of people, you may have noticed that is no longer resolving. Over the past few days, the website has been under a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack allegedly involving a group called LizardSquad.

Even until this moment, we are not absolutely sure who paid for the attack, but many people on Twitter have gone out suggesting that Dan Olson (known for his videos regarding GamerGate, going under the moniker of Foldable Human) bears at least some responsibility for what transpired in this period. All we know for certain is that a person using the name Dan Olson (who could be the man himself) has reported 8chan to CloudFlare — 8chan’s reverse-proxy provider — in an email that was broadcasted through Twitter (screenshot below).

Only hours later, the domain was no longer resolving at all. At around 7 PM Eastern Standard Time, 8chan’s Twitter feed showed us why:

Fredrick Brennan, the founder of 8chan, posted a screenshot of a notification he received from Corp., the website’s host, showing that the domain has been seized due to “child abuse”.

To put this into context, in the past, 8chan has been accused of hosting illicit material involving children (i.e. child pornography). Although the site has broken no laws, people have in the past cherry-picked it apart in order to create an impression that this site is a front for a market it simply doesn’t belong to.

For those of you hoping for some insight into what will happen over the next few days, I have taken a little bit of Fredrick Brennan’s time to reach out to him and ask for his comments on the situation. He said that he will be speaking about the abuse reports with (the domain host) and attempting to revert the seizure. “In the event that I cannot resolve this by speaking to them, I may just have to register a new domain,” he said. “That’s really all I can do.”

While what has happened over the last few weeks may leave a few “8channers” in panic, they need not worry. If Brennan decides to register a new domain name, the registrar can have it up and running on the right IP address within a few hours.

As I come across more information, I will be updating this article to reflect the events that take place.

Update: Perhaps to the dismay of the people who initiated the campaign against 8chan, control of the site’s domain has been handed back to Brennan, according to 8chan’s tweet embedded below.

This is the kind of thing that ICANN can remove its registrar status for. There is a court procedure for this stuff. Registrars are not allowed to steal domains based on somebody else’s say-so. Period.

The absolute contempt that SJWs have for the law when it doesn’t suit them is disturbing as hell.

  • Tech Stegosaurus

I’m more worried about the registrar. Trolls going to troll, when professionals in charge of important infrastructure act on malicious info that’s a bigger problem.

While I have very little love for boards such as /hebe/ or /nnmodels/, I dare to say none of its users would post factually illegal material – partially because Hotwheels would tear them a new one over it, and partially because it is an open secret that 8chan (much like 4chan) is the subject of FBI surveillance, with some theorizing that the most provocative boards actually are FBI honeypots.

One way or the other, if actual child pornography was hosted on 8chan, it would have been taken down much earlier, and in very different circumstances, to put it mildly.

  • The -ARE- FBI honeypots. Just ask The Crippler himself.

  • “child pornography”
Alright, I understand that. But, when I was using 8chan I failed to find any of the “child pornography” claimed to exist. But, the funny part is that 4chan has child pornography and alot more content. Yet, it still remains unaffected by them. It’s amusing how ignorant some people can be.

*Attack a cripple’s only source of income”

Truly these people are beacons of humanity.

The anti’s are escalating their attacks to an insane level, if hotwheels was smart he’d be exploding legal options at this point, it can only get worse from here.

8chan is back up at for the time being

The most disgusting part of this mess is the fact that, according to Fredrick’s twitter account, ads are being run in place of the actual site. Not only that, they happen to be ads for JAILBAIT boards, which leaves me wondering how InternetBS still exists as a company.

The amount of hypocrisy here is absolutely staggering. How anybody could morally support an action like this is beyond my understanding. Jesus.

  • ScewMadd

It’s back up on It will temporarily replace the Japanese version of the board.

Well they’re not ignorant, they intentionally ignore what happens on 4chan. If you’re a part of the SJW crowd, you can break as many rules as you want without fear of retribution because your sins are forgiven as the ends justify the means or some convoluted BS that they come up with.

I hope he puts up another donation page soon.

Brennan also admitted he was suicidal back in September before 8chan took off, and the work he was getting were supposedly lowend jobs. Now his life has purpose, and lives in a warmer climate.

Update: Looks like internetbs decided that getting into a fight with ICANN was not worth it.

  • DynastyStar

I barely ever go there, but I respect it as a site, I just can’t get used to the way messages set up(I’m used to more of a thread-type format).

  • Miguel Leiva-Gomez

    See update 🙂

  • Miguel Leiva-Gomez

Ah, just saw this. I’ve updated the article 🙂

  • Mike

No problem. I noticed it and posted it here so that you could update as soon as possible.

If you think there isn’t any CP on 8Chan, you haven’t spent any time exploring the different boards. Yes, there aren’t photos of child rape but there are descriptions of it and sexualized photos of children. 8Chan got itself into this mess by allowing this material which provided grounds for the registrar’s action.

And if descriptions of how posters sexually molest kids doesn’t bother you, well, I guess you don’t have children of your own and this is just some theoretical issue for you.

  • Ben Jeanotte

Ugh, this is like when someone on facebook reports you for something that isn’t really true just ’cause they don’t like you, and then your account gets locked, and it’s super annoying… that x 10,000… The moderating forces that be really need to look into these types of things better… so much damage and inconvenience happens these days because people keep crying wolf.

  • lucben999

Child pornography is illegal, illegal content gets deleted from 8chan, the poster gets banned and has their IP address reported to authorities, just like it happens on 4chan, Reddit or pretty much any other community. The 8chan admin is taking a firm stance in not banning anything that’s not strictly illegal as a general rule for the site, while allowing the owner of each board to manage any further rules as they see fit, it’s pretty much Reddit as an imageboard.

  • Miguel Leiva-Gomez

This is beyond the point. And as a father of a 5-year-old, I consider it a bit unsettling, yes. The problem here is that the behavior exhibited on 8chan does not violate U.S. law.

8chan is like your local ISP, basically. They can’t boot you if you don’t do something that law enforcement doesn’t consider worthy of such a consequence. Ultimately, it’s ugly. But free expression always is, and I think that curbing the extreme form of it will eventually bring forth a future that I don’t even want to think of letting my child live in. It cuts both ways.
