An official announcement was made on March 15, 2017 on the WB Games Community forum that upcoming fighter Injustice 2 will have microtransactions. Microtransactions will come in the form of “Source Crystals” and will be used for cosmetic and time saving purposes only. Real money will be used to purchase the in game currency and it can be traded for costumes and customization options for characters.

Microtransactions – especially in competitive games – can understandably make players nervous. However, community admin GypsyWB stresses that the inclusion of Source Crystals will not make Injustice 2 “pay to win”. In game currency will be used primarily for making cosmetic customizations to character skins such as using “Character Shaders” to alter the color of gear.

The crystals can also be used to “Transform Gear”. This feature allows players to apply the cosmetic changes from one piece of gear to another so that equipment with better stats can quickly and easily be customized to players visual preferences. Use Transform Gear to combine and forge gear to create your ideal equipment.

Real money will also be able to buy players Premiere character Skins. Some of these special skins and shaders will be available to unlock via gameplay however, if you want to save some time then you can just buy them upfront. These skins and shaders will not have any in game advantage. Power and stat changes will be based on gear.

Another application for Source Crystals is to level up your characters. You can only use crystals to purchase levels for characters after you’ve earned level 20 for one of your characters the hard way. It’s been previously revealed that leveling up characters will also level up Gear. However, the announcement is adamant that buying levels is purely a time saving procedure and will not affect gameplay or game progression.

So there you have it, Source Crystals will be in game currency for Injustice 2 that must be purchased with real money from the PSN or Xbox One stores. A price for crystals has not yet been revealed but will be shared at a later date.  They can be used for Premier Skins, Character Shaders, Transform Gear and quickly leveling up characters. These microtransactions are purely for cosmetic and time saving purposes according to the announcement which states, “To be clear, we value our community and want to confirm that you cannot “pay to win” in Injustice 2.” Injustice 2 will be available for PS4 and Xbox One on May 16, 2017.
