Square Enix is adding another indie game to their collective called Deadbeat Heroes. A superhero themed brawler, Deadbeat Heroes is the debut title of Deadbeat Productions announced in 2016. Now the Square Enix Collective is publishing the game for PC and Xbox One but there’s currently no release date for the project.
Phil Elliott, Director of Community & Indie Development at Square Enix London had this to say about adding the indie title to the collective’s growing selection of games,
Deadbeat Productions’ debut title Deadbeat Heroes is a fantastic demonstration of this team’s talent. Their AAA development pedigree and first-class writing result in a ‘proper’ 3D fighter that’s immensely colourful and often hilarious. Square Enix Collective is very happy to be working with Deadbeat Productions to release Deadbeat Heroes.
Deadbeat Heroes is set in 1970’s London in a universe in which super-powered criminals are causing havoc. A group of vigilante, non-power-possessing civilians take it upon themselves to fight crime. Heavily inspired by classic arcade beat-em-ups and 60’s/70’s superhero comics, the game has a comic tone and distinct visual style.
The story is written by BAFTA winner James Leach and features a script full of humor. As for the gameplay, Deadbeat Heroes is a movement-based 3D brawler. With glass cannon protagonists, players will need to dodge attacks not block them as they jump, flip and climb their way through brawls. Amidst cracking jokes and dodging bullets characters will be able to steal their enemies super powers and perform super-moves.
The game was created by two former AAA developers from Lionhead and Rockstar. Adam Langridge and Imkan Hayati Cofounded their indie outfit Deadbeat Productions to work on their dream project Deadbeat Heroes. Adam Langridge, Director at Deadbeat Productions said,
Deadbeat Heroes is a game that we’ve always dreamed of making. We are delighted that the Square Enix Collective team, with their experience, vision and passion believe in the gameplay, style and… well… daftness of Deadbeat as much as we do.
Deadbeat Heroes does not yet have a release date or trailer but you can check out the game’s webpage here for some concept art and info. It will be available for PC and Xbox One when released.
