Definitely one of the most intriguing Kickstarters in a while. Blackwake is a game that features ships and pirates from the Age of Sail.
The recently announced Kickstarter is still in pre-alpha, but what is there looks promising. Blackwake’s developers plan on having at least 40 players at once, simultaneous land and sea battles, melee and ranged combat, sea monsters (release the Kraken!) and team orientated sailing.
The game plans on being a multiplayer only title, which although may be disappointing news for some, the team of two firmly state that they don’t want to “become a feature creep”, which is admirable.
The developers also expect the game to look better and “completely different” within six months, which is to be expected given that the game is still in pre-alpha.
Blackwake has an expected release date from late 2015 to June 2016, so even if the campaign pulls through it looks as though this will take awhile, which is completely fine. This is something we all should have had years ago.
For those of you who are intrigued by this Kickstarter, there are also a few other titles that are somewhat similar, and are worth a recommendation.
If you fancy a single-player pirate game, Caribbean! is a good choice, although it is still in Early Access.
If you want a multiplayer game that has players working together as a team on a ship, (or Zeppelin in this case) Guns of Icarus Online is both on sale and a fine option for players.
If you want to see some footage of Blackwake, look no further as the trailer is linked below.
