Last April, Steamforged Games announced Monster Hunter World Iceborne: The Board Game. This is an expansion sequel to the studio's Monster Hunter World Board Game,  using the same underlying gameplay while introducing new environments, monsters, and mechanics to the established formula. In less than thirty minutes, the campaign was fully funded with little sign of stopping.

Monster Hunter World Iceborne: The Board Game Kickstarter

According to the official Kickstarter page, Monster Hunter World Iceborne: The Board Game is a co-op game for 1-4 players. Much like the video game source material, all players will work together in order to take down a massive monster, utilizing different weapons and items to bring it down. Once this is done, body parts are harvested in order to make better armor and weapons to help you face tougher monsters. The gameplay is card-driven with a focus on positioning, teamwork, and stamina management. The game can be played either as a full campaign, one-shot arena hunts or even played completely solo. It is also cross-compatible with the Monster Hunter World Board Game.

The core set of Monster Hunter World Iceborne: The Board Game will contain everything you need to start playing. In addition to four new sculpts of various Hunters, all wielding Sword & Shield, Bow, Greatsword, and Dual Blades respectively, the game will include highly detailed models of several iconic monsters. These include the Banbaro, Beotodus, Barioth, and Rajang. The Kickstarter also features an expansion for the game, Absolute Power, which will contain more monsters: Coral Pukei-Pukei, Nargacuga, Shrieking Legiana, and Tigrex, as well as new armor, weapon, and behavior cards respectively. This expansion is Kickstarter-exclusive and will not be coming to retail. Finally, the page confirms that backing any of the tiers in this Kickstarter is heavily discounted from the game's recommended MSRP. If you are interested in this game and want to save some cash, the time is now.

The backer tiers for Monster Hunter World Iceborne: The Board Game are as follows:

  • Core Box Only Pledge for $82: Contains the core set of the game
  • Hunter's Pledge for $160: The core game, the Absolute Power expansion, and all unlocked stretch goal content

Almost instantly, Monster Hunter World Iceborne: The Board Game reached its crowdfunding goal. Within thirty minutes of the campaign going live, it raised $187,206. At the time of writing, it has raised $551,394. Part of this can be attributed to the strong brand recognition of Capcom's action RPG franchise. Another factor is Steamforged Games' reputation of making authentic bespoke board games based on popular beloved IP like Horizon Zero Dawn, Devil May Cry, and Dark Souls.
