Update: I made a mistake! The game is coming out in 2017, not 2016. This has now been rectified. Some new screenshots also surfaced, courtesy of PC Gamer

After 5 long years of wondering if the popular RTS franchise based on the grimdark tabletop game Warhammer 40,000 will ever get its third entry in the series, the wait is finally over. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III is coming and is being developed by Relic!

This news was released to the public after the official Dawn of War Twitter account tweeted out a tantalizing teaser with a time and date for the announcement:

And sure enough, on May 3, the account released what might just be the most exciting trailer for a game released so far this year. Everything you love about the Warhammer 40,000 franchise is here: dogmatic preaching, Orks, massive machines of war and more dead bodies than you'll find in an ancient burial ground. Don't take my word for it! Take a look yourself:

The game's Steam Store page sheds some more light on the game, which is set after a weapon of unimaginable power found on the world of Acherus draws some of the galaxy's most fearsome forces into yet another war of epic proportions.

Players will be able to take control of 3 iconic armies from the popular franchise in alternating missions during the campaign; the Orkish horde under warlord Gorgutz, the Eldar under seer Macha and the Space Marines under the command of the mighty Gabriel Angelos. Whichever side you'll be playing as, you'll be able to bring gigantic machines of war into the field for this entry in the franchise, whose scope has been dramatically increased this time around. For the first time ever in the franchise, you won't just be waging war on the ground. Some battles will have to be fought in the vast nothingness of space!

Players will also be able to collect elite squads that each have their own strengths, weaknesses and unique abilities they can use during the fight. Each faction also has powerful super-abilities that can change the flow of battle dramatically. As you progress through the campaign, so will your units progress with you. You'll be able to build and customize your army from the first moment you gain control of it, and those armies will persist throughout the game. These custom armies will also be carried over to the game's competitive multiplayer where you can "forge new alliances" and then can "turn the tables on your new 'friends' as they become foes".

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III is scheduled to release at some point next year for PC.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
