The Quarry and The Dark Pictures Anthology developer Supermassive Games has announced that it will lay off several of its employees as part of a "reorganization" effort.

Speaking on X (formerly known as Twitter), the studio says it is entering into "a period of consultation", which it expects will "result in the loss of some of our colleagues".

The studio points to the "significant challenges" the gaming industry is currently facing, acknowledging that it is not immune to those challenges itself. Furthermore, Supermassive promises to ensure the layoffs are effected "as respectfully and compassionately as possible".

Supermassive Games is best known for titles like the horror series The Dark Pictures Anthology.

Supermassive stopped short of announcing the scope of the layoffs. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reports that the studio could cut around 90 employees, citing "an email reviewed by Bloomberg News".

If that figure is correct, it would mean that Supermassive is cutting over 25% of its workforce, which would unfortunately represent a pretty significant reduction in numbers.

We've reached out to Supermassive Games for further comment regarding the scale of these layoffs and will update this story as soon as we hear anything.

Supermassive Games is sadly just the latest name in a string of studios that have seen layoffs, closures, and downsizing efforts in recent months.

Others include Disco Elysium developer ZA/UM, which also canceled an ongoing development project recently, as well as Homeworld 3 studio Blackbird Interactive and many of the studios under the auspices of Embracer Group.

Some studios, like Saints Row developer Volition, have been shut down outright, although that story has a somewhat happier ending than many thanks to the formation of Shapeshifter Games by former Volition staffers.

Supermassive isn't shutting down; it'll continue to operate, and the studio says it's "committed" to focusing on its upcoming games in order to "ensure the continued sustainability of the company". Stay tuned for more.
