Orcs Must Die developer Robot Entertainment is working on a new co-op game: Ready Set Heroes. Designed as a short-session game, you, or you and a friend fight through a series of trials and monsters in a race through a dungeon, grabbing as much loot and equipment as you can. Set in the depths of a massive dungeon, it is in these grounds that aspiring fighters undergo trials to become proven warriors. At the end of the dungeon, the first team or player to arrive receives a buff, as all battle it out in a winner-take-all arena. Ready Set Heroes is set to launch later this year for PS4.
Ready Set Heroes is clearly designed as a couch co-op game, supporting many different play modes. In addition to four-player free-for-all online, there's also a four-player split-screen mode. Not only that, but teams of two can play both locally and online. Co-op is a first for Robot Entertainment, who previously only had online co-op for the Orcs Must Die! games. Even if you don't have any friends to play locally, not to worry, as there is a four-player free-for-all mode included. More newsworthy is the fact that Ready Set Heroes won't require an active PlayStation Plus subscription to play online. Usually, this right is reserved for massive, free-to-play multiplayer games, so it's interesting to see it used here in a co-op dungeon crawler.
The announcement of Ready Set Heroes comes on the heels of Robot Entertainment announcing that Orcs Must Die! Unchained as well as the two Hero Academy games would be shutting down later this year. Despite positive critical reception for their past works, they've been plagued by layoffs in the past few years as well. Hopefully, this new party game in the form of Ready Set Heroes is able to invigorate the studio, which is set to come later this year.
