Sonic Forces, an upcoming game in the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise, will feature customizable Hero Character according to a press release.

In a first for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, players will be able to create customizable Hero Character in Sonic Forces. The  character is based on one of seven archetypes: Wolf, Rabbit, Cat, Dog, Bear, Bird, and (of course) Hedgehog. Each archetype has its own set of unique abilities that will define how it will play. For example, the Rabbit archetype has a longer period of mercy invincibility (an immunity to damage after sustaining a hit) and the Dog archetype restarts with five rings after the player dies. A trailer was released alongside the announcement showcasing some elements of this new feature:

In addition to the ability to choose from hundreds of different cosmetic options, players will be able to build gadgets called Wispons. Much like the Color Powers from Sonic Colors, Wispons perform double duty as both offensive attacks and movement abilities. Aside from the choices in archetype, cosmetics, and Wispons, the customizable Hero Character will also have use of a handy grappling hook to help them on their way through the game's levels.

Whatever you decide to create, your character will not be a sideshow in the game's story - he or she will play an integral role in the plot, helping the titular blue hedgehog fight valiantly against the robotic forces of Eggman. Sonic Forces will be releasing for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC sometime during the 2017 Holiday season.

Quick Take

Type your given name (first name) into Google, add "the Hedgehog" after it, and look at the (quite possibly NSFW) horror that the Internet has created. I have borne witness to countless terrible amalgamations of hedgehog and echidna alike, and now you too must live with this terrible knowledge. Be warned - there are some things that you just can't unsee, and some stains can never be truly removed from one's soul.

What do you think of customizable Hero Characters making their way into Sonic Forces? Do you think it will add an interesting element to the game or do you think that the series is best served by taking on the role of existing, long-established characters? Do you think this feature will continue to be a part of the series? Let us know in the comments below!
