SMITE: The New MOBA in Town

Hi-Rez studios may have a game that is not on your radar but should be. The studio behind the highly successful Tribes: Ascend, brings a new take to the massively popular and competitive MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena).

After spending some time with this free to play game, I can honestly say, I was impressed. You see, I have tried to get into MOBAs-in fact I tried every MOBA there is, but I could never get passed the insane difficulties, or the pay to win formulas that plague some. I put decent time into DOTA 2 and Heroes of Newerth. Both of these games, provided great free to play models, but still had the MOBA learning curve. Once you get passed the learning curve, the game becomes its own.

SMITE, has a new take on the genre. It is still, in essence, a MOBA. Creeps, heroes, and objectives are the basics-and anyone familiar with the genre with feel at home. The difference is the perspective is set to third person, which gives combat a more genuine, earthy feel.  Here’s how the studio describes themselves:

SMITE is the online battleground of the gods. Players choose from a diverse cast of deities and use their unique powers to triumph over the opposition in 5v5 team matches. SMITE is a new take on the MOBA genre; rather than observing from above the action, the game’s third person perspective puts players into the thick of combat. Instead of clicking the mouse to move, players use the familiar WASD keys to move and fight their way through SMITE’s dynamic battlegrounds.

If you have wanted to try decimating enemies in a battleground, but have stayed away due to clunky controls, or uninteresting combat, give SMITE a try, it feels more like a third person action game, and may be the remedy you are looking for.
