Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell has surprise-launched its new game via Steam Early Access. Castlehold is a free-to-play strategy game with card battler elements, and it's available to download right now.

What is Castlehold?

5th Cell describes Castlehold as "a new type of competitive strategy game". It's a 1v1 strategy battler that takes place in a "world where time and space have collapsed". The world of The Drift is comprised entirely of the remains of kingdoms and cities across various different stages of technological advancement. You must liberate this new patchwork kingdom from its despotic oppressors, who have used newfound powers within humanity to subjugate the kingdom. You can check out the trailer for Castlehold right here:

Gameplay-wise, Castlehold revolves entirely around Villages, gold-generating resources for you and your opponent. Taking over these Villages while defending your own is the core objective of the game. To help you do so, you'll have access to a wide array of troops, represented by hero cards that have different effects on the battlefield. Rather charmingly, these heroes could be anything from medieval warriors to modern-day soldiers. You'll have to make a decision about whether to play aggressive or smart, going straight for your opponent or expanding across the map to ensure total control.

Right now, you can choose between friendly games, casual matches, and ranked play. 5th Cell says it "hopes to delve into new game modes" as the Early Access period for Castlehold continues. The developer estimates it will be able to fully launch the game in 6-12 months, but at no point will you have to pay a premium to play it; it'll remain free-to-play even once it's fully completed. If you're interested in Castlehold, you can check it out right now on Steam. Hey, what have you got to lose, right? It's free, after all.
