Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is expected to push the franchise's cumulative global box office sales past $1 billion this weekend according to Deadline.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter takes place three weeks after the events of the previous movie Resident Evil: Retribution. The previous film had Alice fighting her way through a secret underground Umbrella facility in Russia that was used to simulate outbreaks of the T-Virus. The latest chapter in the movie franchise continues Alice's adventures against the mysterious multinational company and she once again faces off against Wesker and his cronies.
Although America usually gets movies first, the latest film in the zombie-killing series opened up in Japan a full month ahead of any Western release. It has already grossed $23 million in sales after opening at #1 on December 23, 2016. It made $9.65 million in its opening weekend in Japan, making it the highest grossing Resident Evil film opening in that country to date. Now that it's opened up in America on January 27, the box office sales from the opening weekend are predicted to push total sales for the franchise over $1 billion.
The films have proved to be quite the cash cow for Sony & Screen Gems. The first movie in the series grossed over $100 million, making back its budget of $33 million three times over. Each successive film in the series made more money than its predecessor worldwide, although the fifth film Retribution underperformed domestically and made only $2 million more than the very first film in the franchise domestically.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the sixth and purportedly final film in the franchise. Considering the amount of money they've pulled in over the years, it's safe to say that while this may be branded as "the final chapter" it doesn't necessarily mean that we've seen the end of this particular film series.
