Today's Nintendo Direct started with a bang. The trailer started deceptively with the main characters from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, hyping up a potential sequel or future content for their game. That is until the flame-bladed warrior Pyra reveals that she has been invited to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a fighter.

The trailer went on to show off Pyra's moveset. On the whole, it seemed like a straightforward sword fighter with some firepower attached. But as the trailer continued it also revealed an alternative form for the fighter: Mythra. This is a stellar showcase for both Pyra's unique qualities as a Smash Bros. fighter, this is a series that is criticized too often for having multiple sword fighters in it, but also highlights the diverse qualities of her origin in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Pyra is a living weapon called a Blade, and throughout the events of the game, she unlocks new abilities and powers as she travels the hero, Rex, on a grand JRPG adventure. As part of the story, Pyra unlocks new forms to help Rex in combat, which changes up her weapon type, combat style, and even physical characteristics. Mythra fits this mold perfectly with high-speed and long-reaching attacks. There even appears to be an afterimage dodge shown off in the trailer.

As for how this plays, it is no different from the original version of Sheik and Zelda. Pyra and Mythra will be able to switch places at the push of a button, which opens up multiple possibilities for combos and strategies. Finally, the trailer managed to not (completely) shortchange the main hero of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. In addition to showing off the new combat stage included with Pyra, the living island known as Gramps, we got a look at her Final Smash. When activated, both Pyra and Rex show up for an all-power attack known as Sacred Arrow.

Pyra doesn't have an official release date for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at this time.
