PS4 Update 6.50 Adds Remote Play For Apple Devices

A new firmware update has just been released for PlayStation 4 and it finally allows users with an Apple phone or tablet to stream their PS4 to their mobile devices. Update 6.50 was released earlier today and brings with it some pretty interesting changes for any PlayStation 4 owner who uses an iPhone or iPad. The update is just over 400mb in size and provides a few minor tweaks to other streaming services alongside the major new feature.

PlayStation 4's remote play feature has been available for quite some time on PC and iMac/Macbook products, but for those seeking a mobile option, the choice has been severely limited. Only Sony Ericsson mobile phones have had access to a remote play app until update 6.50, other than the ability being built into the PlayStation Vita. Now with the latest update, others are finally getting access to the much-touted feature of the PS4.

There is no word as of yet of the feature being made available across other platforms, but since modern Sony Ericsson phones all run on a propriety version of Android anyway there is at least some hope that other Android users will be able to join the party at some point in the near future. You can download update 6.50 now on your PS4 or via the PlayStation website.

Quick Take

Wow, this is some pretty big news. As someone who gets a stunning amount of use out of remote play, I'm glad to see the feature being made compatible with more devices. Hopefully, it won't be too much longer before Sony finally bring the Android version to every person's app store, instead of the just those who bought one of their phones. Who knows, maybe this time next year we'll be able to remote play the PS4 on the Xbox One or Switch! (probably not though).

Will you be using the feature in the future? Do you want Sony to bring the remote play app to android? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
