The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth

Today Electronic Arts announced the release date and revealed the first gameplay trailer of its mobile game The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth.

Developed by Capital Games, the title was announced almost a year ago, but now it's time to take a better look. It will release on iOS and Android on May 10, 2023. Pre-rergistration is already open at the official website

Of course, it's going to be free to play with optional microtransactions, and while most gacha games nowadays make an effort to make their "surprise mechanics" looks like something that isn't a literal loot box, you get no such subtlety here.

The game is a mobile RPG that will tell stories set "between the lines" of the original canon to expand on Tolkien’s books as the player takes the role of an adventure that finds a mysteriously abandoned new Ring of Power.

Electronic Arts promises both storytelling and PvP, also "expanding" the original lore "to create a more diverse and inclusive Middle-earth." The art style is described as “styled realism” and combat is turn-based.

You can check out the trailer below and see if it entices you to give The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth a try when it launches next month.
