Ballet of Bullets

Unlikely strategy tie-in John Wick Hex, originally announced in May this year, has a release date. The game is coming to PC and Mac on October 8th and will be an Epic Games Store exclusive on those platforms. Console versions of the game will follow at some point in the future.

John Wick Hex follows everyone's favorite hitman as he battles his way through yet another horde of unfortunate goons. Unusually, it's a strategy game in which you'll have to make carefully-thought-out decisions in order to progress. Developer Mike Bithell (of Thomas Was Alone and Subsurface Circular fame) wanted to capture the balletic fights of the John Wick movies and felt that the only way to do so would be to create "John Wick chess". Here's a trailer for John Wick Hex:

Here's how it works. The game revolves around a timeline which will show the actions of enemies and John Wick. You'll need to plan your actions in accordance with those of your enemies. Actions could include improving your positioning, taking a shot, or taking cover from enemy fire. Each action in John Wick Hex takes time, so you'll have to carefully consider every move in order to make John Wick move through each level as efficiently as possible. It's not a million miles from fast-paced strategy games like SUPERHOT or Frozen Synapse.

We don't yet know if Keanu Reeves will be reprising his role in the game. It seems unlikely given John Wick Hex's imminent release date and lack of announcements to this effect. Actors Ian McShane and Lance Reddick will play their characters from the movies, while Troy Baker will voice the game's villain Hex. John Wick Hex will launch for PC via Epic Games Store on October 8th. Bithell Games is planning to release the game for consoles shortly afterward. We don't have a release window for consoles yet but don't expect those versions of the game until 2020.

Dark Souls changed my life, and I'm here to spread the good news. I like pretty much all sorts of games, but I judge everything by its proximity to our Lord and saviour, Dark Souls.
