A Hat in Time began its Kickstarter way back in May of 2013. The 3D platformer had a very successful Kickstarter, bringing in almost $300,000 when they asked for a tenth of that. Now, four years later, A Hat in Time finally has a release date, which is very soon on October 5th for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

In addition to the release date announcement, the developer, Gears for Breakfast, also announced the extensive mod support A Hat in Time will have as well. That includes a full level editor, full script access, Steam Workshop support, ability to add new hats, new enemies, and new chapters. Basically, you can do whatever you want with A Hat in Time in the eyes of the developers.

To celebrate the announcement, Gears for Breakfast announced some official mods for A Hat in Time. The first comes from Freedom Planet 2 and is Lilac's Headpiece. Lilac's Headpiece allows Hat Kid to perform Lilac's, the main character of Freedom Planet, Dragon Cyclone move. The second comes from Psychonauts 2, which puts Raz's Psychic Helmet in the game, giving Hat Kid an undisclosed ability until the mod launches on October 5th.

More mods are coming as well, and the A Hat in Time Kickstarter showed this image.

Additionally, Kickstarter backers who backed A Hat in Time for $15 or more will also be receiving a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One code for free. At the bottom of the update linked here you can find the links to receive your code. Again, this is only for Kickstarter backers.

Quick Take

It's great to see A Hat in Time releasing finally after all this time. It was never one of those games with few updates or developers who seemed out of touch and lacked communication, but it certainly took a long time to get to release. Here's to hoping that it lives up to the expectations people have placed on it. It's nice to see the release isn't all that far away either.
