Fallout: Project Brazil, the fan-made mod for Fallout: New Vegas that serves as an unofficial prequel for Obsidian's take on the post-apocalyptic universe, has been renamed Fallout: New California according to a news post on the project's Mod DB page. Additionally, the mod is stated to be nearing its release.

Fallout: New California is a total-conversion mod for Fallout: New Vegas. For those unfamiliar with the term, that means that much of the content of the mod has been made from the ground up. While there are thousands of mods for the game, most of them focus on modifying existing content by adding new locations, changing existing features of the game, or otherwise enhancing or expanding upon the vanilla experience. New California sets out to explore the time between the end of Fallout 2 and the beginning of Fallout: New Vegas through an original story.

The old name of Fallout: Project Brazil was stated by Project Leader Brendan Lee to be nothing more than a code name. He feels that New California works better considering how the game focuses so heavily on the region of the New California Republic. The project as it stands today is more or less a fully complete mod that's in need of the finishing touches such as bug fixes and optimizations. An Alpha version of Fallout: New California is being circulated within a tight-knit group of modders close to the team.

Mod DB & the Nexus will have the entire mod available as a single 6 GB download thanks to discussions between the development team and the respective websites. The mod will be released as a complete, fully-finished package.

If you're the type to delve deep into a wiki for a few hours, the mod's developers have made the design document for the mod available to viewFallout: New California does not yet have a firm release date, but it seems to be well on its way to completion. If you'd like to stay apprised of the mod's development, you can head on over to its page on ModDB or the Nexus. or you can check out the project's Facebook page.

What do you think of Fallout: Project Brazil changing its name to Fallout: New California? Do you think the mod will live up to the expectations of diehard fans who have been waiting years for the project to be completed? What do you hope to see in the mod? Let us know in the comments below!
