Logic Artists announced in a press release this morning that Expeditions: Viking, their second installment in the Expeditions series, is now in development. There is no mention of when the game will be released.
Following up on their first game, Expeditions: Conquistador, Viking is a historical RPG and strategy game based around the times and culture of vikings. It follows the rookie leader of a "clan of farmers and fighters" as the clan travels to mysterious lands. The player's job, as leader, is to gain power, whether it be through peaceful trade negotiations or violent raids, but how you choose to gain power will lead to consequences. The player is also challenged with defending the clan's home from a series of foreign and domestic enemies.
While Expeditions: Conquistador was financed on Kickstarter, raising over $77,000 with 1,569 backers, Expeditions: Viking hasn't received a Kickstarter campaign, nor did their title Clandestine currently in Early Access.
Although it keeps many features from Conquistador, Viking includes some new features, such as an upgradable player village and changes to travel and combat (which will now be part of the same layer, allowing smooth transitions between turn-based combat and exploratory movement). Players can also see their custom character represented in travel and combat, rather than just conversations and decision making.
“We're improving on the Conquistador formula with deeper and more dynamic systems for character progression, combat abilities, role-playing, choice and consequence, and expanding on our favorite part of Conquistador: camping and wilderness survival,” said Jonas Waever, the creative director for Logic Artists.
Logic Artists released their first game, Expeditions: Conquistador, in 2013 for Windows, Linux and Macintosh. It received generally positive reviews from critics and users alike, and holds a Metacritic score of 77 and a GameRankings score of 81.5%.
Today, Logic Artists is nearly finished developing Clandestine, a stealth-action game set in the Bond-like world of nineties espionage. Clandestine is currently on Steam Early Access, with generally positive reception among 35 reviewers.
Logic Artists was formed in 2011 by a group of Game Design students who studied together at the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark.
“We are very excited to return to our roots in the RPG genre, and as developers from the Nordic region, to make a game in a setting that is a lot closer to home than anything we've done before,” said Waever.
