Today BioWare delivered a new tease for the next Mass Effect game, and while it's quite cryptic, it'll probably excite the fans of the storied sci-fi franchise.
We start with a post on the official site which appears to be teasing the game as a possible sequel to Mass Effect 3.
"We’ve asked ourselves many of the same questions you’ve asked us over the years! What happened to everyone you know and love in the games? Who really died? Who had kids with whom? What does a baby volus sound like? What about all the galaxies? The endings! What the heck is going on with our asari scientist-turned-Shadowbroker? What about S— nevermind...you get the idea.
And of course, to those questions, there are answers, but you’ll have to wait to hear them"
Yet, that's not all, as the post included a code spelling "Epsilon" and leading to a countdown page, which after a short time (funnily, exactly 7 minutes after the countdown expired) revealed a brief video showing a mysterious character's feet.
The page also includes the following text:
/////ACCESS CODE: EPSILON
/////ACCESS CODE ACCEPTED
/////SECONDARY ENCRYPTION DETECTED
/////VJBSVU-XXXX-XXXXXXXX
/////ANDROMEDA DISTRESS SIGNAL DETECTED
/////YEAR SENT: [REDACTED]
/////AUDIO TRANSCRIPT: ALTHOUGH THEY SHOULD KNOW BY NOW NOT TO UNDERESTIMATE HUMAN [REDACTED]
Update 2:14 PM EST: the hints led to another page including the following link and text.
/////ACCESS CODE: OCULON-2819-DEFIANCE
/////ACCESS CODE ACCEPTED
/////TERTIARY ENCRYPTION DETECTED
/////CLASSIFIED: REVIEW BRIEFING MATERIALS ON OFFICIAL ALLIANCE COMMS CHANNELS
Update 2:20 PM EST: the hints have led to another countdown, currently at 1 hour and 40 minutes.
/////ACCESS CODE: POST-NEBULA
/////TIME UNTIL DECRYPTION COMPLETED
Update 4:07: The full video has now been uncovered, and you can watch it below. While it showcases a mysterious character with an N7 badge, it doesn't reveal further dates or evidence hints to further reveals.
At the moment, this is where we are. We don't know whether more will be teased or shared as the celebrations for N7 Day (November 7) continue. If anything else appears, we'll be sure to update this post with all the information we can find.
To catch up on what happened with the franchise, following the release of Mass Effect 3, BioWare opted to explore a different part of the franchise's lore with a "new beginning," Mass Effect Andromeda. Unfortunately, the reception was when the game was released in 2007 very mixed and certainly not up to par with the Franchise's legacy.
Since then, the Mass Effect series has been pretty much dormant besides the release of the remastered Legendary Edition in 2021, as we wait for the next chapter that hopefully will steer the (star)ship back in the right direction.
In the meantime, if you want to get ready for the next Mass Effect, whatever it may be, you can find the Mass Effect Legendary Edition on Amazon.
