Originally released in 1987 the original Phantasy Star was the first in what would become a long series of JRPG games that continue to this very day. Not only did it begin its own franchise but it also used a lot of features that would end up becoming staples of the genre, such as top-down overworld traversal, interactive towns to visit, and large dungeons. When entering the dungeons through the game would shift from a top-down to a first-person perspective.
The Algol system is being ruled by King Lassic, once a benevolent ruler now turned cruel dictator after converting to a new religion. Rebellions against his rule are slowly cropping up, in an effort to quell them Lassic kills Nero Landale. You play as Alis, Nero's younger sister, who plans to travel and gain allies for her own rebellion to take on the King.
While originally released for the Master System and Megadrive Phantasy Star has since been remade for the Sega Saturn, PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance, Wii, and Nintendo Switch
