The core of Planetbase’s gameplay centers on building a space colony on other planets of varying hostility. Each planet has its own unique environment which can make for different and more challenging gameplay; for example, a particular planet type might have no wind whatsoever which rules out using wind turbines to generate power. Players get an initial set of supplies and a handful of colonists to get things going with an immediate goal of self-sustainability in resource production and food. Once they have that sorted, players can focus on expanding their base and bringing in new colonists to meet their growing needs. In addition to sandbox-style gameplay, the game also offers a series of challenges for players who would like to shoot for the moon (so to speak).
As the game is a city-builder of sorts, the control scheme used on the PC wasn’t suitable to play with a controller. The developer has accounted for the different control scheme and will be making appropriate changes to the console version of the game. The Xbox One pad will allow you to move, pan, and rotate the camera just as you would on PC. A new radial menu should manage to make building simple enough, and the trading interface has been redesigned to better work with the new control scheme.
The Xbox One version of Planetbase will retail for $19.99 or your regional equivalent, the same price as the PC version. You can pre-order and pre-load the game on the Microsoft Store, and if you don’t yet own it on PC you can pick it up on Steam for 35% off until April 24.
