It’s a monumental task making your own video game. You need to design, code, create art, animations, compose a soundtrack, and more. Of course, if you’re not interested in doing that, you can always just lift someone else’s work. Such is the case with the newly announced PlayStation 4 game Life of Black Tiger, who seems to have taken its music from elsewhere.
You can watch the trailer for the game here. The whole thing is already pretty weird. The graphics seem more reminiscent of the original PlayStation, likely due to the fact that the game began its life as a mobile title. The animations are awkward, the game seems to constantly be chugging, and the gameplay looks hilarious in all the ways gameplay really shouldn’t look hilarious.
The best part is the trailer’s music, a moody piano piece that doesn’t really seem to fit with the rest of the the trailer. The reason? Well it turns out the music is actually taken from an anime. To be specific, it’s taken from Parasyte -the Maxim- and is a version of the song Next to You. Oddly enough, they don’t actually use the original version of the song, but rather a version marked as being at a faster tempo, likely to try and hide it from YouTube’s ability to catch those things.
We did our best to match up the audio signatures with a third-party software, but although the music is clearly the same, the preview video’s audio has been edited to change the pacing slightly as well as amplitude and to add a bit of extra background in some areas. This makes the audio appear VERY close to the same but still a bit different from most of the MP3s of the same song. However, if you play these two songs at the exact same time, 0:00-0:21 are identical, as are other parts of the song, with some minor changes:
If you’d like to see both videos played side-by-side, click here, pay attention to 0:00-0:20! Please note it’s not perfect, but does a solid job of showing just how close the music is to the original.
This isn’t the first time we’ve found a game that steals from others. Last year we were introduced to the game Solbrain Knight of Darkness. Originally we noticed that its trailer was using music from Ori and the Blind Forest, but some more digging into the game revealed assets from games like World of Warcraft, Tera, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a description from Odallus: The Dark Call, art from various DeviantArt artists, and screenshots of models from Turbosquid for the trophies. The game is no longer available to purchase on the PlayStation Store.
Life of Black Tiger was developed by 1Games, who’s website claims they are “creating not in the Earth game,” and are apparently a “small but big company.” For the most part they make mobile games and are the developer of games such as Life of Wolf, Life of Deer, and Wolf Online.
We have reached out to 1Games for clarification on whether the music was used just for the trailer or can also be found in the game itself. If we receive anything back we will update this article.
