Firewatch developer Campo Santo has been purchased by Valve, according to the official Campo Santo website.

The news came on Saturday, via a blog post on the website attributed simply to “Campo Santo” rather than any specific individual. The blog post details some of the reasons behind Campo Santo and Valve’s decision, as well as a few logistical points about how Campo Santo will continue to make games and what this decision means for the company’s future.

In the post, the Firewatch devs talk about their development and business processes, and how “all of it is geared towards surprising, delighting, and entertaining the customers who have shared in [their] success.” In Valve, they have apparently found “a group of folks who, to their core, feel the same way about the work that they do,” making the purchase an “obvious match.”

There’s also a tongue-in-cheek reference to a bottle of champagne found during a visit to IGN’s headquarters, which had an undelivered Game of the Year award for Portal 2 inscribed on it. Campo Santo “repurposed” this bottle to celebrate the launch of Firewatch a year after the visit, so “in some sense, this is a return home for [them].”

Campo Santo will relocate to Valve’s HQ in Bellevue, Washington, but will continue to develop games under their own name (just with Valve’s name also attached to projects). Upcoming “single-player first-person adventure” In the Valley of Gods will be unaffected by the move, apart from now being a Valve game as well as a Campo Santo product. In addition, Campo Santo has pledged to continue supporting Firewatch, as well as producing their regular blog content and Quarterly Review website content. The core Campo Santo team of twelve, it seems, won’t be affected or changed by this decision.
