Alone in the Dark Illumination was undoubtedly one of the worst games of 2015. The game’s review average is decidedly negative, with few positive or even mixed reviews. Atari doesn’t exactly have a good track record lately with their video game releases. Well, despite the fact that no one was playing the game on the day of launch, Atari has apparently released a new summer update for Alone in the Dark: Illumination, releasing a trailer that you can see below.

The Summer 2016 update has a variety of features, which are attempting to fix some of the major criticisms of the game. These updates include:

  • Reworked Missions and objectives: Allowing for more variety regarding monster placement on the map, in an attempt to make things more challenging, as knowing where enemies were coming made the game a little bit too easy.
  • Updated Story Elements: They redefined the narrative delivery and added voice-overs to the game. Ok, that’s nice to see.
  • New Monster Types: Tougher Goblin Brute was shown in the trailer, looking like he’s got some explosive element to them, and they’ve “tweaked” monster behavior and animations.  This includes the goblin a shoulder ram attack,  the demon firing an arcing projectile, and letting the Hellhound teleport now. Several changes were made regarding creatures and damage mechanics regarding them being in the light or not, and they added a kamikaze effect to the exploding shapes.
  • Improved Player Abilities: The witch gets a new fireball, and the hunter gets some different weapons. Each class gets “meaningful” changes. New skill tree progression, and a “smoother pace to level advancement”.

The update is live as of now, and there is more content coming soon to the game. That’s not saying much because the original release didn’t exactly have a lot of good to talk about.

Quick Take

Why.

Why will Atari not let a series die? Why must we see franchises of old become living zombies in front of us? Why must they become horribly disfigured monsters that are a shell of their former selves? I can’t even begin to describe how bad Alone in the Dark: Illumination is. It’s one of the worst games I’ve ever covered on YouTube and my God,  does it show at almost every level.  Who is this update even for? Steam charts listed the last 30 days as an average player count of 0.4. NOT EVEN ONE PERSON.  Atari, just let it die. Let it die.

So…is this game worth getting now with this update?

  • Galbador

Believe it or not… but there are people playing this. And for the question why atari is not let this series rot to death? Because it was once a good series. Maybe one day, the series will shine in a new light? The thing is, if we would let series die just because of bad games, we would have no games anymore. The world needs bad games like evilness, so that we can learn from it.

  • Galbador

Depends… It is not the best game. Rent it for the weekend and make you self a judgement.

“We would have no games anymore” is a slippery slope. Silent Hill is pretty much dead and I’m glad because it wasn’t the series I fell in love with a long time ago. I’d rather they let it die than keep raping the corpse. same goes for a LOT of franchises nowdays.

Maybe without the crutch of old, dead franchises they’d be forced to, you know, maek gud gaem.

“It is not the best game”

Based on what I’ve heard, that seems to be an understatement.

    Also, my question was rhetorical.

  • Galbador

    How could I know that?

  • Ibi Salmon

It seems I didn’t make it clear enough. My apologies.

  • Galbador

    It’s okay.

Amusingly.. It looks like a bad single player game for sure.
but.. iteven if its pretty off it looks seriously amusing for idle playing with friends. kind of like the old Hunter the Reckoning games.
its 20, which is fairly cheap.
so i might buy myself and a few friends copies for steam…
just to give it a whurl and see if its fun in team mode for idle playing. kind of like how we treat RE 5/6

I like how it looked. and as I look and read more about it. I can see where they were aiming but it looks like for.. i guess money reasons? again… they released it without it being finished.
honestly I would like them to go one last time at it.. doing something similar to this one. but ya’kno.. finishing it fully. and taking notes from some other stuff. I don’t want a CoD with horror elements or a RE 4/5/6. I would take something closer to RE Revelations 1/2 though, that is the tone nad mix of action suspense horro they should shoot for and model sorta after. But keep the unique skill ups

Basically.. combine RE revelatiosn with Hunter the Reckoning.

Did you ever try it with the update?
It seems like it might be fun… with friends for aimless playing kind of like one does with say L4D and guantlet and old but great Hunter the Reckoning games.

You can get it pretty cheap on Steam now so it probably wouldn’t be a huge investment to try it out.

It gets even better! They released yet another update on Oct 28. It’s pretty big too, coming in at about 3.5gb. Here’s what it says on their Facebook page.

“Our massive Halloween update for Alone in the Dark: Illumination brings a completely brand new, horrific location and a pulse-pounding new way to play. Paired with a ton of animation and visual refinements, AITD has never been more terrifying! To celebrate, we’re discounting AITD 66(.6)% for Steam’s Halloween Sale, starting RIGHT NOW!”

Maybe we can just file this under ‘Better late than never’. You have to admit it takes some commitment to spend the precious time and money to fix an 18 month old game that no one bought in the first place. I think they are genuinely trying to make it a better game. Maybe they’ll have a thanksgiving sale and I’ll pick it up cheap.
