This Farthest Frontier Farming Guide will tell you how Farming works, how you can increase your yields, and the best Crops to plant in Farthest Frontier!

How Farthest Frontier Farming Works

Farthest Frontier Farming is a little more complex than you might be used to in most colony sims. While you don't have to worry about watering Crops, you will have to worry about 8 specific factors for each Crop:

  • Crop Yield - How much of a Crop you can expect to get.
  • Frost Tolerance - How well a Crop handles the cold.
  • Heat Tolerance - How well a Crop handles the heat.
  • Rockiness Resilence - How well a Crop grows in a field with Rocks.
  • Weed Suppression - How well a Crop grows in a field with Weeds.
  • Grow Time - How long it takes a Crop to grow.
  • Impacts Fertility - How a Crop affects the fertility of the soil.
  • Fertility Dependence - How much a Crop's success is dependent on good Soil.

Some of these elements are affected by the time of year. For example, it's a good idea to plant a Crop with poor Heat Tolerance at the start of the year or the end of the year so as to avoid Summer.

Other elements, however, are controlled by you. These are called "Yield Factors" and are a part of every Crop Field:

  • Fertility - How Fertile the soil is in the Crop Field. Most Crops gradually reduce Fertility with each harvest.
  • Weed Level - How many Weeds are in the Crop Field. Periodic Field Maintenance will remove Weeds.
  • Rockiness - How many Rocks are in the Crop Field. Periodic Field Maintenace will remove Rocks.
  • Soil Mixture - A balance between Clay and Sand in the Crop Field. Each Crop has an ideal soil mixture; you can adjust each Crop Field as needed.

How Crop Rotation Works in Farthest Frontier

Crop Rotation is a three-year calendar that shows what your Farmers are doing in the field. The image behind the bar shows the time of year. Put a crop at the start and it will be planted in early Spring -- this is best for Crops with low Heat Tolerance. Put a crop in the middle, however, and it's planted in Summer -- an ideal time to plant Crops with low Cold Tolerance.

You can only plant so much each year in a Crop Field, so you must carefully consider which Crops you'll plant. I typically like to plant 1 Crop per field and 1 harvest of Clover (to restore the soil's fertility a bit) for 2 of the 3 years. The third year in the Crop Rotation is used on another run of Clover and two runs of Field Maintenance.

Best Farming Crops to Plant in Farthest Frontier

The best Farming Crops to plant in Farthest Frontier are Peas and Turnips in the early game. You can plant two harvests of Turnips and a harvest of Clover in one year, giving you a solid boost of early game food. Peas, on the other hand, can be planted along with a run of Clover and a round of Field Maintenance every year, assuring a consistent supply of Food every year.

That said, the best Farming Crops are a variety -- you don't want to grow just one thing. Crop Diseases are very much a thing in Farthest Frontier Farming and your best chance of avoiding catastrophe is to plant a little bit of everything./
