If you're waiting to play Fallout 4 on current-gen consoles, you're going to have a little longer to wait, sadly.

Bethesda has announced that the long-awaited current-gen (or next-gen) update for Fallout 4 has been delayed.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the studio acknowledges that fans have been waiting patiently for the next-gen update, which was first announced in 2022 (thanks, NME) as part of the Fallout franchise's 25th anniversary celebrations.

Said update was originally scheduled to arrive sometime in 2023, but Bethesda now says that it needs "a bit more time" to implement the update, and so it's been pushed back to 2024.

Fallout 4's next-gen update needs some more time to cook.

When the update does eventually arrive, it'll update the game's resolution and performance, giving it support for 4K and higher frame rates.

In addition, the update will fix many bugs for Fallout 4 on consoles, and it'll also include extra Creation Club content, although it's not entirely clear what that content will be.

News of this update's delay means that it could arrive alongside the Fallout TV show, which is scheduled to begin airing on April 12th via Amazon Prime Video.

The Fallout TV show will begin airing next year.

We got our first look at said show earlier this year. It'll feature familiar Fallout elements, including a lone vault dweller wandering the wasteland, a ghoul bounty hunter, and the Brotherhood of Steel.

Hopefully, the Fallout 4 update will land before the show airs so that we can re-familiarize ourselves with the franchise's expansive universe.

If you missed out on Fallout 4 the first time around, it's the fourth mainline entry in the Fallout series, continuing Bethesda's reinterpretation of the games as first-person shooter-RPG hybrids with heavy exploration elements.

Fallout 4 dials down the RPG choice systems and expansive dialogue options of Fallout 3 and Obsidian's New Vegas, focusing instead on the core gunplay, settlement building, and exploring the wasteland.

The game is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and it'll be coming to current-gen platforms sometime in 2024 as well.
