The Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Iberia release date has been pushed back to 2021, owing in part to significant changes to the game's engine that will improve the lighting system.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is exactly what it says on the tin — a game where you drive a truck and make deliveries across a scaled-down version of Europe. Although the game is over eight years old, the developers have been releasing new DLC content every now and again to add more European countries and expand the destinations that players can visit.

The next planned destination was the Iberian peninsula. This new DLC would have added Spain and Portugal to the same, both of which are frequent holiday locations for Europeans who aren't keen on traveling too far abroad. Unfortunately, this next DLC won't be coming out this year — but we did get a first look at some forthcoming lightning changes.

Naturally, one of the key reasons for the delay was the shift to a remote work strategy as we've seen with nearly every other major game company of note. Production has slowed for SCS Software's 200+ employees despite the company's "ambitious" plans for its 2020 content schedule.

"Our fans have no doubt got used to the pattern that we have managed to keep in recent years, and you can bet that we have tried as hard as possible to stick to it once again, and get you a new map expansion in December," read a Steam Community announcement from the developers. "The scope and scale of Iberia production were challenging even for a normal year, but even with over 20 map designers working full-time on the DLC, this year proved to be too much."

Another major reason for the delay is an overhaul to the game's lighting engine. SCS Software declined to go into specifics, but the company is hesitant to release the newest DLC content without finishing the lighting upgrade first. In short, the developers have been working on a new DLC and an engine overhaul at the same time and that one-two punch of development challenges has ultimately resulted in the Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Iberia release date being pushed back to next year.

When is the Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Iberia Release Date?

The Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Iberia release date will be sometime in 2021. SCS Software has not yet set a specific date for the next DLC's launch; as with many game developers, they have firmly embraced a philosophy of "When it's done," promising to only release the DLC when it meets its rigorous quality standards.

For now, there are still hundreds of miles of virtual roads for players to enjoy while they patiently wait for the Iberia DLC. You can buy Euro Truck Simulator 2 or its American counterpart American Truck Simulator on Steam for $4.99 each, a 75% discount as part of the Steam Autumn sale. The DLC for both games has some nice discounts, too, so it's a good time to hit the road!
