Capcom has revealed details about how the Resident Evil next-gen upgrade will work, and it has also stated that there won't be any physical editions for Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Earlier this month, Capcom revealed that Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7 are getting free next-gen upgrades in 2022. Unfortunately, the announcement was a tad light on details on the time; now, a new series of tweets has outlined what players can expect for these next-gen versions.

How the Resident Evil Next-Gen Upgrades Will Work

The Resident Evil next-gen versions aim to make the transition from PS4 to PS5 (or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S) as seamless as possible according to a new series of tweets from the game's official account.

As previously stated, save data and progress will carry over to the next-gen versions of the game. Any DLC purchased separately or included with Residente Evil 7 Gold Edition will transfer over, too. This means that you should essentially be able to pick up your game on next-gen right from where you left off without any problems.

When it comes to physical editions, however, things get a little trickier. To start, there won't be any discs for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S -- at least not yet.

"Next-gen physical editions aren't planned right now, but all three [games] will be available digitally on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S," Capcom said in the Twitter thread (via Reddit). "As noted above, PS4 and Xbox One discs, and all PS4 and Xbox One digital editions of the game, will also be eligible for an upgrade."

What about people who bought a disc for PS4 or Xbox One, though? Well, anyone who has discs will need to use them to get their free upgrade on console. Unfortunately, it looks like that means Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition owners won't be able to get the Resident Evil next-gen upgrades.

There's still no official release date on the Resident Evil next-gen upgrades, but Capcom expects them to come out later in the year. For now, you can buy the franchise's latest game Resident Evil Village for PC and consoles starting at $59.99 or your regional equivalent.
