Path of Exile: Expedition is the latest expansion to the long-running ARPG that's releasing later this month for PC, the Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Path of Exile: Royale, a battle royale which was first released back in 2018 as a limited-time April Fool's game mode, is being brought back for weekend play sessions.

What's new in Path of Exile: Expedition?

The next expansion for the ARPG will feature the Expedition Challenge League, four new merchant NPCs, 19 new Skill and Support Gems, balance changes that are apparently massive, a flask system rework, and new item types.

In the story, the player will encounter the Kalguur, who have come to Wraeclast to follow their ancestors and retrieve their lost artifacts. Players are tasked to help them find these artifacts by placing a chain of explosives across the site and detonate them to unearth the fallen Kalguur, who then rise as an undead army that must be destroyed. Depending on where the explosives are placed, players may find chests that will contain ancient runed artifacts.

These artifacts can be traded to the new merchants: Tujen the Haggler, Rog the Dealer, Gwennen the Gambler, and their leader Dannig. Each NPC has a distinct trading style, with Rog sweetening deals to try and make a profit, while Gwennen will offer you items that will be a gamble.

There are also Logbooks to discover, which can either be crafted to maximize both their value and difficulty or can be traded with other players. Dannig can use these Logbooks to take players to the locations they describe, where players can then eventually unearth new bosses to kill and rewards to loot.

For Path of Exile: Royale, there's a whole bunch of new improvements. It has a separate game balance and will introduce a Royale-specific passive skill tree, with low-level versions of skill gems that can be found in the regular game. There will also be a better spectator mode, leaderboards, improved terrain, interface upgrade, flask-refreshing troves, and more.

Path of Exile: Expedition will launch on July 23 for PC and macOS and July 28 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles. Path of Exile; Royale will be available on weekends "throughout the length of the Expedition League", so if you want to get your battle royale fix be sure to be available on the weekend.
