Assassin's Creed Origins has received a free update on PC in the form of the Animus Control Panel, Ubisoft has announced.

Originally revealed back in early April 2018, the Animus Control Panel is essentially a built-in god mode-style official modding tool (albeit with slightly less freedom than an unofficial modding system) which allows players to control and customize various aspects of the game. There are roughly 70 different parameters and features which PC players of Assassin's Creed Origins can tweak. Here's a video from Ubisoft's official YouTube account detailing a few of the options the Animus Control Panel offers:

Jose Araiza, one of the game's producers, outlines in the trailer some of the things players will have the opportunity to fiddle with once they download the free update. Some of the parameters are visual, such as being able to change the player's character model so they're no longer playing as standard protagonist Bayek. Others affect gameplay in different ways, like increasing the player's movement speed, changing the awareness and behavior of the NPCs in the game or adjusting the amount of damage done with attacks in combat. Araiza makes a wry reference in the trailer to the one-hit assassination ability, which is not present by default in Origins, but which players can use the Animus Control Panel to add back into the game.

Don't worry if all this talk of modding and altering parameters is going over your head. Ubisoft has created three presets which will alter the game in different ways to create different tailored experiences. You'll have to check out the Animus Control Panel yourself to see exactly which parameters these change, but here's a quick rundown from the game's official Steam page:

  • Hardcore Stealth: The Steam page calls this the mode for players who want to "play like a real assassin". Easy detection is counterbalanced by deadly one-hit assassination.
  • God Mode: This mode promises the ability to "unleash supernatural power on [the player's] enemies". Expect to be overpowered in this mode.
  • Mad World: This one's a little more esoteric, but the Steam page says it turns the game's world into an "aggressive environment" in which players must "stay away from sandstorms".

Ubisoft is also encouraging players to create and share their own Animus Control Panel presets on the official Steam Community thread, so if you're a budding modder or have some ideas of how the world of Assassin's Creed Origins should look, now's your chance to shine. The thread contains detailed instructions on how to do this, too, so don't worry if you're new to it all.

The Animus Control Panel is only available for PC players of Assassin's Creed Origins (sorry, PS4 and Xbox One owners). Of course, many PC games have a thriving fan modding community, but it's not often we see something like this added to a game courtesy of its developer.
