At the PlayStation 5 not-E3 event, we got our first look at Ghostwire: Tokyo. First shown at E3 last year, Ghostwire: Tokyo is looking to be one trippy game taking place on the streets of a Tokyo overrun by paranormal threats.
Most people likely remember Shinji Mikami presenting Ghostwire: Tokyo last year, and our first glimpse is a very horror-filled Tokyo. The people aren't exactly people, many faceless, and some even headless. A truly apocalyptic event has occurred, wiping out 99% of Tokyo's population, leaving behind an occult version of Toyko.
Saying no more than the player having some strange encounter, you;'ll be granted supernatural abilities of your own to fight off the paranormal threats. As seen in the trailer, shooting flames from fingers, knocking enemies back with force, and a host of other elements come into play.
The threats you'll face are spirits, some of which were shown in the trailer. For example, the young child in the yellow raincoat will call for other spirits to help fight when he feels threatened. Created from the power emotions of a troubled youth separated from his parents, this spirit is those emotions manifested.
Each spirit will come with its own challenges and weaknesses, so as you traverse the near-empty streets of Tokyo, you'll have to figure out the tricks to each one on the way. Beyond those spirits, however, are the mysterious group wearing "Hannya" masks. Finding out their role in the overall story and state of the world will be a key part of Ghostwire: Tokyo.
In a blogpost on the PlayStation Blog, Game Director Kenji Kimura spoke some on what the PlayStation 5 brought to the table in the game's development, praising the 3D sound: "Our hope is that with the 3D sound, you will feel compelled to seek out and identify what is causing those sounds you hear."
Further, he talked about the benefits the haptic feedback on the Dualsense controller in terms of the gameplay in Ghostwire: Tokyo: "We can’t wait for you to get your hands on the new controllers and play in this thrilling, unpredictable Tokyo where you’ll never know what’s going to happen next."
There's much more to be learned about Ghostwire: Tokyo, so stay tuned. Ghostwire: Tokyo releases sometime next year exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
