Warhammer 40,000 Film Contract Signed by Amazon and Games Workshop, Production Can Now Begin

Games Workshop has officially announced that the ink has dried on its contract with Amazon to produce films and shows based on Warhammer 40,000. Now the question is what is the first project?

Last year, Games Workshop announced they had entered an agreement for an Amazon Warhammer 40,000 film deal. This deal would allow Amazon Studios to produce films and TV set in the grimdark sci-fi universe. It even has avid Warhammer player and actor Henry Cavill attached as executive producer.

Now, it seems the dust has settled and the ink is dried on that film contract.

The news of the finalized Amazon Warhammer 40,000 film deal came from an official Warhammer-Community post.

Imagine a pure action movie focusing on a single unit.

The update on the situation was mostly unchanged from the initial announcement from December 2022. Amazon will have the global rights to produce streaming shows, TV, or feature films set in the universe of Warhammer 40,000.

Furthermore, they have partnered with Vertigo Entertainment, a production company dedicated to bringing the horrors of the Warp and the authoritarian dystopia that is the Imperium of Man into live-action. In addition, Cavill may star in those productions, though it is unclear in what roles.

As for the big development, it is simple. Games Workshop has signed the full agreement drafted up by all involved. This means film and TV projects can now begin production.

When it came to mentioning any talent that has signed on in this agreement, GW was coy, stating:

All we can tell you right now is that an elite band of screenwriters, each with their own particular passion for Warhammer, is being assembled to help bring the setting and characters you love to the screen. This illustrious group will be championed by Henry Cavill, who stands ready to take his place as executive producer – bringing his pen, sword and/or spear to the project.

Now the real question is, what story will be the first? The beginning of The Horus Heresy? The creation and deployment of the first Space Marines? A hyperviolent slapstick comedy centered around an Ork warboss and his underlings?

It could possibly be any of those things. But no matter what gets made, it's a safe bet it will be exclusive to Amazon Prime.
